Jolly Sailor Inn
Facing south and sheltered by a fold in the moor, this traditional inn welcomes travelers on the Whitby road offering good food and cheer.
It is in an old stone building just off the A171 ‘Moors Road’ between Guisborough and Whitby. In times past it was a favourite for sailors returning to their homes inland after being paid off in Whitby. Hence the name Jolly Sailor Inn. It was thirsty work tramping miles across the moor, and with money in their pockets, a rest at the inn was welcome!
Did the young Captain Cook stop here on his way to see his parents in Great Ayton when he was learning his trade in Whitby?
Bar meals and Endeavour restaurant.
